Permeke Museum
Poster Campaign & Social Media Rebrand
Within the existing visual identity for Permeke Museum made by Victor Verhelst I modernised the look of the posters. The old posters were not dynamic enough so I came up with a new more dynamic typographic template that is now used for the posters of the museum.
LUCA School of Arts
Flyer
i.c.w. Studio Corbin Mahieu, 2024.
For the occasion of the reopening of their ‘Sculpture Garden’, LUCA School of Arts asked for a flyer with a clear plan of the tour and background information about the garden and school’s history.
ASAP PILAR Festival
10th Edition Poster
i.c.w. Studio Corbin Mahieu, 2024.
On the occasion of the 10th edition of the ASAP PILAR Festival I had the opportunity to design a poster that would reflect that special event. Since the structure has been the same for the previous editions, we thought it would be great to keep it and only add an extra-layer in print, highlighting the line-up and the special edition.
PILAR
Social Media label
Pilar asked me to design a label that would be used on social media templates to highlight their new campaign where they support the local brussels scene. The type is set to be well readable on a smaller scale and fits the existing visual identity.
Sorry No Headphones
Visual Identity
LUCA School of Arts, 2024.
Sorry No Headphones is a music festival organised by LUCA School of Arts where students can perform as musicians, performers and DJ’s. We are leaving our individual digital headphones to come together to celebrate music. The non-digital aspect was a starting point for the conceptual framework.
NAAR — Safar
LP Sleeve
NAAR is a collective aiming for equalities for artists across all borders. The album Safar is a collaboration between Moroccan and Western (mostly French) artists. The sea is used as a metaphor for a place with no borders, a no man’s land. On the front, each letter of NAAR is encrypted in nautical flag alphabet. The same universal alphabet that is used to communicate on the sea. There is as little hierarchy as possible in the text to emphasize the horizontal values of the project.
Master Exhibition Poster
Poster Identity
LUCA School of Arts, 2024.
A poster for the graduation exhibition of the Masters. Highly graphical, it is visually playful and puts the names of the designers on the forefront. The encircled red letters form a map of different identities from a new generation of designers.
Masquerade
Publication
205 x 260 mm (closed).
Otis College Los Angeles, 2023.
Masquerade is a publication around the concept of a mask. The research results in an A to Z catalogue exploring the idea of a mask in all its forms. The content of this book is self gathered. The main typeface, Arial Narrow, is neutral and formal and reflects the conceptual approach of the publication that results in a database of masks.
The grid used for the images is not the same as the one used for the typesetting which results in a lot of layers who are seemingly masking and overlapping eachother.
Le Geste Modeste
Master Publication
LUCA School of Arts, 2024.
During my master I researched the possibilities of interaction between audio and visuals. The research resulted in a series of three interactive performances/installations. This publication holds my masterthesis.
The publication is also performative, by having the content flipped and a cover spread over two pages it asks for interaction and attention from the reader. It is divided in two main parts. The first part contains the artistic theoretical framework and is set on white paper. The second part focusses on the process of the projects and is set on a black background as a reference to the black box that is used for my performances.
dublab radio
Visual Identity
Otis College of Art and Design, 2022.
Dublab is a Los Angeles based webradio creating community around arts & music. Focused on giving a platform for experimental music and because music is all about time, the identity is continiously evolving and experimenting. The radio communicates through this endlessy continuing piece of tape, that is scanned and used as the path for the typography. This way, creating a new asset is also a fun experiment for the person making it. Each piece is also unique and the background is created from the 15.000+ images found in their archive.
The Broadsheet Collection
Newspaper
350 x 500 mm (closed).
LUCA School of Arts, 2022.
The Broadsheet Collection is a collection of 140 images and a part of the text A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson. The newspaper became and experiment where the typesetting is defined by the placement of the images. The images were first categorized depending on their graphic features and losely displayed next to eachother. Dividing this rectangle into 40 parts became the layout for the images. The typography is following the rule saying that a sentence should be around 10 words long and therefore it is changing in pointsized depending on the space the text finds. The accompanying standing sign works as a didactic tool to better understand the publication.
Pepto Prismo Pink
Visual Identity
A2 and A6.
The poster had to be inspired by the visual identity of the medicine Pepto Bismol. Defragmentation was a common thread in the oeuvre of the exposing artists and used a lot of cutting and collage in their work. The visual identity uses the same methods and therefore the flyer is the poster cut in smaller parts.
MUCE
Type Design
MUCE — a platform that focuses on the circular economy — contacted us to develop a fully functional typeface based on their existing logotype. The typeface is made by reusing a simple circular shape and represents the project’s values of sustainability and reuse.
Rum Extreme
Type Design
Rum Extreme is an extreme variant of the revival of Scotch Old Styles, discussed above. This modular font has a more dynamic look and is minimal in the use of modular elements. It has the same contrast than Rum Regular. Combining the two fonts results in an interesting clash.
Essays and Interviews About Publications
Publication
147 x 209 mm (closed).
LUCA School of Arts, 2023.
This assignment consisted in taking inspiration from another publication to give form to given essays and interviews about publications.
I took inspiration from fish is only meat you know, there’s no way around it. by graphic designer Nick Mattan. I was struck by his choice to only use one font family (Garamond Pro) and see how different manipulations in typesetting could give different voices to the pieces of text. Each essay, interview and title is layed out in a different way, as an experiment: playing with the different parameters of typesetting, pacing of the text, readability etc. To leave room for the typographic elements to interact, the images are kept separate from the typography.
Match/Mismatch
Diptic
LUCA School of Arts, 2020.
Together with a classmate we had to make a diptic poster based on something we had in common or something that is the opposite for us. My cat just died then and his cat was still alive. As people tattoo the name of their loved ones on their body, we made graphic tattoos for ourselves and integrated cat-industry typography.
C12
Stationary
LUCA School of Arts, 2021.
C12 is a electronic music club located in the Horta Gallery in Brussels.
The font used in the identity is a reference to the Art Nouveau architect Victor Horta, who the gallery is named after. As for the number 12 it is represented by 12 readymade dots stickers, placed in a cluster that evokes dancing identities.
ALEA — Guax
Art Direction
2023.
Guax is a Brussels based electronic music producer who makes cinematographic electronic tracks with a lot of texture. That’s why we chose to blend the digital and the real world. Each track has one wave representation of it and all together they form the cover.
Taste is the Enemy
T-Shirt Concept
LUCA School of Arts, 2022.
‘If your choice enters into it, then taste is involved — bad taste, good taste, uninteresting taste. Taste is the enemy of art, A-R-T.’
— M. Duchamp
This long sleeve is a quite literal interpretation of Duchamp’s quote: a monster made with logo’s of unhealthy junk food brands. The assignment was restricted to only black and white colors.
Yves Tumor
Fanzine
350 x 210 mm (closed).
Otis College, 2022. Los Angeles.
Fanzine dedicated to musician Yves Tumor. The zine is a visual journey reflecting the developement of their career. Starting from experimental noise music before switching to more poppy music, the image curation and typography go from textured elements and scan experiments to more photograpic images, who reflect a more iconic persona that the artist has become over the years.
Rum Regular & Extreme
Type Design
Rum Regular is a font revival of Scotch Old Styles, a typeface from ‘The Year Book of Specimens,’ an old American type foundry specimen book. The font is gentle, kind alongside being formal and structured.
Entirely drawn in RoboFont.
Rum Extreme is an extreme variant of the revival of Scotch Old Styles, discussed above. This modular font has a more dynamic look and is minimal in the use of modular elements. It has the same contrast than Rum Regular. Combining the two fonts results in an interesting clash.
Minima Docta
Poster Series
LUCA School of Arts, 2020.
Poster series for the lecture series Minima Docta organised weekly by LUCA School of Arts. The posters had to be strictly typographic and the emotion of the typoography reflects the theme of the lecture.
